Good morning.

A bishop once told a grieving mother, "the child of those tears shall never perish." He gave her no date. It took seventeen more years.

Monica was married young, in Tagaste, North Africa, to Patritius — a pagan, by the Encyclopedia's own description "of a violent temper" and dissolute habits, though he "always held her in a sort of reverence." It was not an easy marriage. She bore it, the record says, "by her sweetness and patience," and in doing so became something like a quiet apostle to the other unhappy wives of her town, who knew she suffered as they did.

Of her three children, all her anxiety centered on the eldest: Augustine — wayward, brilliant, and by his own later account, lazy. Sent to study at Carthage, he fell into grievous sin and the Manichean heresy. Monica was grieved enough by it that she drove him from her own table over the heresy — until, the Encyclopedia records, a vision urged her to take him back in. She sought out a bishop, unnamed in the record, who gave her the line the Church has kept for sixteen centuries: "the child of those tears shall never perish."

It took seventeen more years — Augustine's own count, not a rounded figure attached later. Monica followed him to Rome when he slipped away by stealth, missed him there, and followed him again to Milan, where through the preaching of St. Ambrose he finally yielded. Mother and son spent six quiet months together afterward before Augustine's baptism. On the journey home to Africa, at Ostia, death overtook her — and it was there, near the end, that Augustine wrote he and his mother shared the conversation and shared contemplation that became some of the finest pages of his Confessions.

Christ names a very specific failure here — not disbelief that the master is coming, but presumption on how long he's taking. The wicked servant doesn't deny his master exists. He just decides the delay means he can act as though he doesn't. The faithful servant, by contrast, is simply found doing his actual job — distributing food at the proper time — whenever the master happens to arrive. No secret knowledge of the hour. Just faithfulness sustained across however long the waiting turns out to be.

Seventeen years is a real, unromantic length of time to hold that posture for one specific, painful hope. Monica is the Gospel's faithful servant with a name and a date: found still praying, still following, still at her post, when the answer she'd been given no timeline for finally arrived.
