The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Good morning.

Last night was the watching. Today is the thing itself. The Church has held two truths about Mary's death since the earliest centuries — that she died as every human being dies, and that her body did not see corruption, because the one exception to Adam's curse was fitting for the one who bore the New Adam. Rome does not define the mechanism. It defines the fact: body and soul, she is already where the rest of us are promised to go.

First class, white vestments, a holy day of obligation — the highest rank the calendar has. The Mass opens with a vision, not a eulogy: "A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars." The Collect makes the theology explicit in one sentence — God "took up, body and soul, the Immaculate Virgin Mary... into heavenly glory," and asks that we, "always devoting ourselves to heavenly things," be found worthy to share it. Not admire it from a distance. Share it.

The Epistle borrows a stranger's words to say what Mary herself would never say about herself: Ozias blessing Judith as a type of the woman who would come after her, "blessed art thou, O daughter, by the Lord the most high God, above all women upon the earth." And the Gospel does something even more direct — it doesn't describe her exaltation at all. It simply lets her speak. Elizabeth calls her blessed first, and Mary's answer is the Magnificat: "My soul doth magnify the Lord... He that is mighty, hath done great things to me." Every generation that has called her blessed since has only been agreeing with what she said about herself, in advance, before any of it had happened.

The mighty position, unmanaged, is the one that eventually gets put down.
