Vigil of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Good morning.

Every Friday this summer has belonged to Aquinas. Not today. Tomorrow the Church celebrates the Assumption — Our Lady taken up, body and soul, into the glory that everyone else has to wait for the general resurrection to receive. Tonight is her vigil, and in the Traditional Latin Mass it is kept as its own full liturgy, not a footnote to tomorrow. St. Thomas, who spent his whole life reasoning his way toward the God she carried in her own body without needing an argument for it, would understand exactly why his day gives way to hers.

The old calendar ranks this Mass second class — one grade below a first-class solemnity, higher than an ordinary Friday would ever reach on its own, because of what it is preparing for. White vestments, not violet, even on a day that was a mandatory fast until 1957: this is watching, not mourning.

The Mass opens, as every Mass in this rite opens, the same way for a fasting parish congregation as for a vigil of the Mother of God: the priest and server at the foot of the altar, before either of them has taken a step toward it, praying Psalm 42 back and forth to each other. "Judge me, O God, and distinguish my cause from the nation that is not holy; deliver me from the unjust and deceitful man." Only after that — after asking to be found worthy, not assuming it — does the priest say what he came to say: "I will go in to the altar of God: to God Who giveth joy to my youth."

Everything else in the vigil builds toward the same posture pointed at her instead. The Introit already sees the wedding procession forming — "the virgins of her train are brought to the King... with gladness and joy." The Epistle lets Wisdom herself speak in the first person, in words the Church has always heard as Mary's own: "I bud forth delights like the vine... my spirit is sweeter than honey... my memory is to everlasting generations." And the Gospel takes a stranger's compliment — "blessed is the womb that bore You" — and lets Christ redirect it to the thing that actually made her blessed: "blessed are they who hear the word of God and keep it." Not the biology. The obedience. That is the whole reason there is a vigil at all.
