Give alms, and all things are clean

Tuesday's Gospel, Luke 11:37-41, and what is in store this week

Good morning.

A Pharisee is amazed that his guest did not wash before dinner. The answer he gets is not about water.

✠   TODAY'S MASS

Tuesday of the Twenty-eighth Week in Ordinary Time

Gospel: "And as he was speaking, a certain Pharisee prayed him, that he would dine with him. And he going in, sat down to eat. And the Pharisee began to say, thinking within himself, why he was not washed before dinner. And the Lord said to him: Now you Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter; but your inside is full of rapine and iniquity. Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without, make also that which is within? But yet that which remaineth, give alms; and behold, all things are clean unto you." — Luke 11:37-41

The Latin of the last line is Verumtamen quod superest, date eleemosynam: et ecce omnia munda sunt vobis.

In the Catena Aurea, Augustine says what the washing was: "the Pharisees washed themselves with water, as if a daily washing could be a cleansing of the heart." Chrysostom says what the Lord put in its place: "almsgiving is that which is free from all injury. It makes all things clean, and is more excellent than fasting." Bede says how far it goes: "He speaks of 'what is over and above' our necessary food and clothing. For you are not commended to give alms so as to consume yourself by want, but that after satisfying your wants, you should supply the poor to the utmost of your power."

✠   THE TEACHING

Catechism* 2447 names almsgiving among the works of mercy and quotes this Gospel in the same paragraph: *"giving alms to the poor is one of the chief witnesses to fraternal charity: it is also a work of justice pleasing to God… But give for alms those things which are within; and behold, everything is clean for you."

And 2446 says what kind of debt it is. It quotes St. John Chrysostom: "Not to enable the poor to share in our goods is to steal from them and deprive them of life. The goods we possess are not ours, but theirs." Then it adds: "When we attend to the needs of those in want, we give them what is theirs, not ours. More than performing works of mercy, we are paying a debt of justice."

✠   WHAT IS IN STORE THIS WEEK

Tuesday, October 13 through Friday, October 16 · the levels the system is watching

This issue carries no market report, because the point this week is the calendar. Here is what is on it.

→ Tuesday, Oct 13: the big banks begin reporting third-quarter earnings. JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo and Citigroup are listed for Tuesday, Bank of America and Morgan Stanley for Wednesday, and U.S. Bancorp and Charles Schwab for Thursday. Those dates come from press previews published October 9 and 10, so check each bank's own calendar before relying on one.

→ Wednesday, Oct 14: the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the September Consumer Price Index at 8:30 AM ET.

→ Thursday, Oct 15: the Producer Price Index, and the memorial of St. Teresa of Jesus.

→ Friday, Oct 16: import and export prices.

→ Neither AMD nor CrowdStrike reports earnings in the next 21 days. The Federal Open Market Committee meets October 27-28.

The levels do not change. SPY closed Friday at $778.51; a close above $779.37 lifts the two-loss warning, and whether to act on it is my call as Fund manager each day. A close below $629.29 turns the tape, and the system sells every long. The stops on CrowdStrike at $249 are my own call as Fund manager.
