Good morning.
A crowd asks Jesus for a sign. In Matthew, a carpenter is given four dreams, and each time the next line says he got up.
Monday of the Twenty-eighth Week in Ordinary Time
Gospel: "And the multitudes running together, he began to say: This generation is a wicked generation: it asketh a sign, and a sign shall not be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. For as Jonas was a sign to the Ninivites; so shall the Son of man also be to this generation. The queen of the south shall rise in the judgment with the men of this generation, and shall condemn them: because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold more than Solomon here. The men of Ninive shall rise in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it; because they did penance at the preaching of Jonas; and behold more than Jonas here." — Luke 11:29-32
The Latin of the first line is Signum quaerit, et signum non dabitur ei, nisi signum Jonae prophetae.
In the Catena Aurea, Basil says what a sign is, and what this one was: "A sign is a thing brought openly to view, containing in itself the manifestation of something hidden… He gives them a sign, not from heaven, because they were unworthy to see it, but from the lowest depths of hell; a sign, namely, of His incarnation, not of His divinity; of His passion, not of His glorification."

Pope Francis, in Patris Corde, calls Joseph "an obedient father" (3): "God revealed his saving plan to Joseph. He did so by using dreams." After the first dream, which told him not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife, "Joseph's response was immediate." The letter quotes Matthew for it, and the Douay-Rheims has it this way: "And Joseph rising up from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and took unto him his wife." — Matthew 1:24
The Latin is Exsurgens autem Joseph a somno, fecit sicut praecepit ei angelus Domini.
The letter follows him through the next dreams: the flight into Egypt by night, the return, and a fourth dream that sends him to Galilee, where "he made his home in a town called Nazareth." Of the return it says: "Once again, Joseph promptly obeyed."
The crowd in Luke asks for a sign. Joseph, in Matthew, is given what he needs and acts on it.
Friday's close: SPY $778.51, +0.6% · Nasdaq 100 +0.5% · Russell 2000 +0.5% · tape BULL, regime choppy · new longs still paused by the two-loss warning
There is no new scan this morning, because the weekend has none, so these are Friday's numbers. The S&P 500 fund closed at $778.51, $0.86 below the $779.37 level that lifts the two-loss warning. The tape turns, and the system sells every long, only on a SPY close below $629.29, which is 19.2% below Friday's close. By our own count, 9 of the last 25 sessions are distribution days for the S&P 500 fund and 4 for the Nasdaq 100 fund. The scanner's list holds twenty-eight names at or near their 52-week pivots, and none triggered.
AMD closed Friday at $607.86, 0.6% below its entry of $611.31. CrowdStrike (CRWD) closed at $275.06, 10.6% above its $248.69 average over 636 shares; the stops at $249 are my own call as Fund manager. The seven puts cost $18,426 and were worth $14,897 on Alpaca's marks. The idle-cash sleeve is in commodities (DBC) and short-term Treasuries (SHY).
Today the stock market is open. Columbus Day is a federal holiday, but the New York Stock Exchange's 2026 holiday list does not include it, so stocks trade from 9:30 AM ET. The bond market is the one that closes: the industry association SIFMA recommends a full closure, although each firm decides for itself. That comes from market-calendar sites; I have not checked SIFMA's own calendar.
What is ahead this week.
→ Tuesday, Oct 13: the big banks begin reporting third-quarter earnings. JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo and Citigroup are listed for Tuesday, Bank of America and Morgan Stanley for Wednesday, and U.S. Bancorp and Charles Schwab for Thursday. Those dates come from press previews published October 9 and 10, so check each bank's own calendar before relying on one.
→ Wednesday, Oct 14: the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the September Consumer Price Index at 8:30 AM ET.
→ Thursday, Oct 15: the Producer Price Index.
→ Friday, Oct 16: import and export prices.
→ Neither AMD nor CrowdStrike reports earnings in the next 21 days. The Federal Open Market Committee meets October 27-28.
The levels do not change: SPY above $779.37 lifts the warning, and SPY below $629.29 turns the tape.
