Our Lady, Who Kept the Words

"And his mother kept all these words in her heart."

Good morning.

This is the hundredth issue of Catholic Daily, and it falls on Saturday, Our Lady's day.

✠   TODAY'S MASS

Saturday of the Twenty-fifth Week in Ordinary Time

The Church also offers an optional memorial of Sts. Cosmas and Damian, Martyrs.

First reading: "Remember thy Creator in the days of thy youth, before the time of affliction come." And at its close: "And the dust return into its earth, from whence it was, and the spirit return to God, who gave it. Vanity of vanities, said Ecclesiastes, and all things are vanity." — Ecclesiastes 12:1, 7-8

The psalm: "Lord, thou hast been our refuge from generation to generation." — Psalm 89:1 (Psalm 90 in modern numbering)

Gospel — Luke 9:44-45 (the Mass reads Luke 9:43b-45)
"And all were astonished at the mighty power of God. But while all wondered at all the things he did, he said to his disciples: Lay you up in your hearts these words, for it shall come to pass, that the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men. But they understood not this word; and it was hid from them, so that they perceived it not. And they were afraid to ask him concerning this word."

In Aquinas's Catena Aurea, Cyril says that Jesus "bids them lay up in their minds as a certain deposit the mystery of His passion." Bede says that "this ignorance of the disciples proceeds not so much from slowness of understanding as from affection," because they could not believe that the One they took to be God would suffer death.

✠   OUR LADY

Mary, who kept the words

Luke writes the same thing about Mary and Joseph when they find the twelve-year-old Jesus in the Temple: "And they understood not the word that he spoke unto them." Then Luke adds what he does not say of the disciples: "And his mother kept all these words in her heart." — Luke 2:50-51. Earlier, at the shepherds' visit, it is the same: "But Mary kept all these words, pondering them in her heart." — Luke 2:19

The Finding in the Temple is the fifth of the joyful mysteries of the Rosary. John Paul II writes in Rosarium Virginis Mariae that "Mary and Joseph, fearful and anxious, 'did not understand' his words," and, of the day itself, that "Saturday has always had a special Marian flavour."

Bede, on that verse, in the Catena Aurea: "The Virgin, whether she understood or whether she could not yet understand, equally laid up all things in her heart for reflection and diligent examination." And: "Mark the wisest of mothers, Mary the mother of true wisdom, becomes the scholar or disciple of the Child." He goes on: "as the Word itself was before in her womb, so now she conceived the ways and words of the same, and in a manner nursed them in her heart."

✠   CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING

The Woman of the Magnificat

Pope Leo XIV closes Magnifica Humanitas with Mary, and says what she sees: "Nothing has changed around her; the socio-political situation of her time remains the same. The Romans continue to control her land, and her people are still subjugated and humiliated. Yet, everything has changed within her, and this allows her to see what is invisible." (Art. 243) He ends by writing: "I entrust our desire to the Mother of Christ, to the Woman of the Magnificat." (Art. 245)

✠   THE MARKET

The week ended higher for the index and mixed underneath. The S&P 500 fund rose 1.3% on the week to $771.35, the Nasdaq 100 fund 3.2%, and technology 3.5%. The equal-weighted S&P 500 fell 0.6% and small caps 0.7%. Friday added 0.5% to the S&P 500 fund.

The three long positions held. AMD rose 12.7% on the week to $630.47, 3.1% above its entry of $611.31. CrowdStrike (CRWD) gained 6.1% on the week and fell 2.9% on Friday to $252.10, 4.5% above its entry of $241.25. Neogen (NEOG) rose 5.9% to $13.77, 0.7% above its entry of $13.67. Each closed above its exit level, its breakout pivot less 2%, at $569.29, $226.38 and $12.74, so nothing sells at the open.

The scanner's list holds twenty-nine names at or near their 52-week pivots, and none triggered. Buying is also paused for now under Livermore's rule after two losing trades in a row. It resumes when the S&P 500 closes above its last swing high with the tape still bullish. The system keeps its rules whether or not it can see what comes next.
