Feast of Saint Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist
Ephesians, read alongside it, gives the theology under the story: "I therefore, a prisoner in the Lord, beseech you that you walk worthy of the vocation in which you are called... And he gave some apostles, and some prophets, and other some evangelists, and other some pastors and doctors, for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ." Matthew is named there, in his own future — a tax collector becomes one of the evangelists Paul is describing, decades before Paul writes it down.

The tax collector Christ called by name
Matthew worked the customs post at Capernaum, on the border crossing, under Herod Antipas — collecting tolls from his own countrymen on behalf of an occupying power. It was among the most despised professions in Jewish Galilee, grouped with "sinners" as a matter of course by the religious establishment of his day. Christ walked past his booth and said two words. Matthew got up and followed him, and then, the Gospel tells us, hosted a dinner where "many publicans and sinners" sat down with Jesus — the same crowd Matthew had always kept company with, now around the same table as the Lord.
Tradition holds that Matthew preached in Jerusalem for some fifteen years after the Resurrection before going out to other lands, and that he is the author of the Gospel that bears his name — the first book of the New Testament, written, tradition says, with a particular eye toward showing a Jewish audience that Jesus fulfilled the Law and the Prophets. On how his life ended, honesty is worth more than drama: the Roman Martyrology places his death in Ethiopia, by martyrdom — but the tradition is not unanimous. At least one ancient witness, Heracleon, recorded by Clement of Alexandria, held that Matthew died a natural death. The Church keeps his feast regardless of which is true; what isn't in doubt is the calling itself, and what he did with it.

What to watch this week: a deeper look at the AI/technology sector's leadership this weekend — the full holdings list behind the sector's leading ETF, not just its largest names — found real cracks starting to show: eleven names, including some real weight behind the sector's growth story, are now confirmed rolling over on their own charts. That's a meaningfully wider reading than a first, incomplete look had suggested. Worth watching whether that number keeps building through the week.
