Paul doesn't ask the Corinthians to take his word for the resurrection. He names the witnesses — five hundred of them, many still alive to be asked.

Thursday of the Twenty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time

Paul is not preaching a private conviction. He is reciting a chain of custody — who saw the risen Christ, in what order, how many, and a pointed note that most of the five hundred are still around to be questioned directly. It is the language of a man who expects to be checked, not just believed.

The claim that can be checked is the claim worth making

Robert Bellarmine (1542–1621) was a Jesuit, a cardinal, and one of the great minds the Catholic Reformation produced — and despite his rank, he lived plainly and gave away most of what he had. He is best remembered for his Disputationes de Controversiis Christianae Fidei, a three-volume, point-by-point defense of Catholic doctrine against the arguments of the reformers. What made it different from a polemic was its method: every claim had to be traced — to Scripture, to the Fathers, to the councils — not simply declared true because a cardinal said so.

That is the same discipline Paul is practicing in today's epistle, four centuries earlier and for a very different audience. He does not say "believe me because I am an apostle." He says: here is who saw him, here is how many, here is where to check. Bellarmine's entire life's work was the theological version of the same instinct — that the truth of a claim rests on what can actually be shown, not on the authority of the one making it.

It's worth carrying that instinct past theology. Any number, any claim, any report that can't be traced back to where it actually came from is asking to be taken on faith it hasn't earned. Scripture and a Doctor of the Church both modeled the alternative: name your source, and let it be checked.
