The Exaltation of the Holy Cross

Good morning.

✠   TODAY'S FEAST

The Exaltation of the Holy Cross

Monday belongs to St. Joseph in this newsletter's own rhythm — but today the actual calendar overrides that, and it's worth following rather than forcing. September 14 is a real, ranked feast: the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

It goes back to 326 AD. St. Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine, traveled to Jerusalem and is traditionally credited with locating the True Cross — tradition holds that three crosses were found together, and a dying woman was brought to touch each one; she was healed the moment she touched Christ's. Constantine had the Church of the Holy Sepulchre built over the site of the crucifixion and burial, and dedicated it September 13-14, 335 AD. That dedication — not a later theological decision — is the actual reason the feast sits on this date. It began in Jerusalem, as an anniversary, and only later spread through the universal Church, reaching Rome by the 7th century.

✠   TODAY'S MASS

Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

Reading 1 — Numbers 21:8-9
"And the Lord said to [Moses]: Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it up for a sign: whosoever being struck shall look on it, shall live. Moses therefore made a brazen serpent, and set it up for a sign: which when they that were bitten looked upon, they were healed."

The people were dying — fiery serpents sent as consequence for turning on God and Moses in the wilderness. God's remedy is genuinely strange: not removing the snakes, not curing the bite directly, but telling the dying to look at a bronze image of the very thing that was killing them.

Gospel — John 3:14-16
"And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him, may not perish; but may have life everlasting. For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in him, may not perish, but may have life everlasting."

Christ makes the comparison Himself — He doesn't leave it to later readers to notice. The bronze serpent lifted in the desert is the type; the Cross is the reality it pointed toward all along. Looking, not touching, not fully understanding — just looking, honestly, at what was lifted up — was always the whole instruction.

✠   THE MARKET

Friday's close: SPY $764.29, +0.85% · system ACTIVE · regime: choppy

No new session since Friday — the same numbers reported in Saturday's issue, unchanged over the weekend. SPY closed $764.29, up 0.85%, regime still choppy (RS 90+ only, capped at 2 positions). No new breakout; LifeStance Health (LFST), already an open position from last Thursday's breakout, remains on watch alongside Marathon Petroleum (MPC), still short of its own pivot.

Week ahead: Wednesday, September 16 carries the week's real weight — Retail Sales (August data) at 8:30 AM ET, then the FOMC rate decision at 2:00 PM ET, with the Fed chair's press conference at 2:30 PM ET. Both land the same day. That's the session most likely to actually move the regime one way or the other.

Enoch scanner — Friday's close, September 11, 2026 (last session): choppy regime, LFST and MPC both on watch
