A Mustard Seed, Repeated

Good morning.

Before the Rosary, there were nine quiet years.

Dominic became a canon of the cathedral chapter at Osma while he was still a student, and for nine years he lived there mostly unseen — his biographers describe him as "hidden in God and rapt in contemplation," which is another way of saying there is almost nothing to report. No great sermon yet. No order founded yet. Just a young man, and the discipline of waiting on God in a room nobody was watching.

Then came Languedoc, and the Albigensian heresy, and years of preaching that did not visibly work.

Here the record has to be told carefully, because it is easy to overstate. The Catholic Encyclopedia's own language is exact: "the devotion of the Rosary, which tradition says was revealed to Saint Dominic, had come into general use about this time." Tradition says. Not a documented event with witnesses and a date — a tradition, carried by the Church for eight hundred years, about a man who was already known for something else entirely: he sold his own annotated books to feed starving families in a famine at Palencia, and a contemporary biographer records that he twice tried to sell himself into slavery to ransom others held captive by the Moors. That is who tradition says received the Rosary — not a man looking for a shortcut, but one who had already given away everything else he had.

Whatever the precise history, the thing itself is not in dispute: a small, repeatable, entirely un-dramatic prayer, spread through the Dominican preaching that followed, doing more against the heresy than years of argument had done. Not a bigger weapon. A smaller one, said again and again.

Gospel: "Because of your little faith... if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you." — Matthew 17:20

→ The disciples had already failed at the thing Jesus does easily. A boy is possessed, "he falls into fire, and often into water," and the disciples — the ones already sent out with authority — cannot drive it out. They ask why, privately, the way you ask a question you're afraid of the answer to.

The answer is not "you need more." It is faith the size of a mustard seed — the smallest seed anyone in that room would have known, sown once, not gathered by the fistful. Jesus does not tell them to try harder at the same scale. He tells them the scale was never the problem.

The first reading gives the same instruction from the other end. Habakkuk stands at his watchpost, waiting on God to answer a real complaint — violence unanswered, the wicked prospering — and the answer he gets is not resolution. It is patience with a promise inside it: "Write down the vision clearly upon the tablets, so that one can read it readily... if it delays, wait for it, it will surely come, it will not be late." And then the line the whole day turns on: "the just man, because of his faith, shall live." Not because of his results. Because of his faith.
